As we age, certain health risks and conditions become more prevalent. Conditions such as cardiovascular disease, COPD, arthritis, and even cancer can become increasingly common.

The West Toronto Ontario Health Team (WTOHT) is committed to helping you take control of your health. Recognizing that 50% of cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, the WTOHT is focusing on early detection as it stands as one of the most effective strategies for improving chances of survival.

The WTOHT is working with agencies like Cancer Care Ontario to promote colon cancer screening rates in West Toronto as colorectal cancer is one of the easiest cancers to get screened for. Fecal Immunochemical Tests (FIT) are painless, easy to use, non-invasive to the individual getting screened and are highly effective at detecting early signs of the disease.

To detect cancer early, we recommend that you screen regularly. When colorectal cancer is caught early, 9 out of 10 people can be cured.

If you are 50 years of age or older, does not* have have a family doctor and would like to get tested for colorectal cancer, call 811 (TTY: 1.866. 797.0007) and ask for a FIT.

811 is a free secure and confidential service from the Government of Ontario where you can call or access online 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to get health advice from a registered nurse.

Once you are mailed a FIT test, you can use the kit to take a stool sample and mail it to a lab for analysis. If they detect any positive results, the program will connect you to a family doctor in your local community in West Toronto to help you with next steps.
